Shoes of Prey ~ Custom Shoe Shopping Experience

$
0
0

So, at the recommendation of a reader, I recently tried Shoes of Prey. They are kind of like the eShakti of the shoe world. There you can custom design (from their selection) and then have them make shoes to your specifications. The cost runs something along the lines of $120-$300 per pair. That's relatively reasonable considering my shoe habit.

I began by ordering flats: these oxford wingtips, to be precise. They came in at about $120.

I found the process of ordering relatively simple. I designed mine with the cap and sides of patent (water resistant) but the upper section leather (for comfort and workability). They give you several pairs of laces so you don't have to use red (that's what I chose, but they sent black as well).

I had to send these back because they were too big around (the laces closed to an overlap). I took photos of the ill-fit and included it with the return. Returns are not free, but cost can be counted toward the next order.

What I liked:

  • Custom fit
  • Custom design
  • Choice in fabric and pattern
  • Interface with company felt fine. They understood my issues and redid the shoe accordingly

What I did not like:

  • Soles ~ only option is a flat nude tread-less dancing style sole. I really don't like this for walking, too slick. I'm going to have to take them in and get them soled over with something more rubber. (For this reason alone I won't be ordering flats from them again.) I might as well get dance shoes instead.
  • Pattern memory ~ they did not store in their system the measurement adjustments I needed for fit (the reason I had to sent the shoes back). This means, if I order from them again, I will likely have the same issue. And have to go through the return process.
  • Heels ~ I don't love the style of heel options for their high heels. There is nothing super vintage.

Final thoughts...

Frankly, my narrow skinny little feet do fit many Italian-designed shoes. Since I only buy leather, most will break eventually. I just don't know if this site is something I need in my life. I will keep them in mind if there comes a time when I require a very specific color shoe (emerald green, for example, is often hard to find) and might try a pump, but until they get better soles for their flats I'm out. And it is usually flats I am struggling to find.

New Acquisitions ~ Bags, Scarves, and More (Off to WorldCon)

Here, Fashionable Reader, are some new acquisitions added to my collection over the last few months...

Charming Charlie Everyday Bag-in-bag $30

This little bucket bag isn't perfect: it doesn't have a good top closure but it's exactly the right size, and stays firmly upright. It also is the two tones brown AND tan I've been looking for. Plus it has a vintage-enough look for me. I already own a little vintage brown crocodile bag that is very cute and garners lots of compliments but it is not practical. It has some wonderful qualities that I love, like a tan vinyl interior (cleanable and easy to see) but it has a fateful flaw... it's slightly too small for conventions and so darn tipsy.

It's in great condition so it may end up going off in a goodie bag via a Newsletter contest or something. Since, frankly, a bag fits everyone! Because my new bag is both brown and tan I also decided to get rid of an old tan one as this new baby can do most of that ones work. A two for one replacement! Closet goal met.

Found this cute red cardy at T.J. Maxx on super clearance and couldn't resist the fact that it now fits me without a button gap. It's a solid fire-engine color, perfectly matching an old H&M knit top I have and turning that, effectively, into a sweater set. Matched reds, amazing. It's a lighter weight than my 1940's wool one, and the wool is more cherry color.

Speaking of outer wear, I dyed this sage green jacket brown recently.

The sheath dress part of the suit was irreparably ripped last time I wore it. The jacket now fits beautifully, after the reduction. I had no use for a sage colored one, much as I love the color, but I do need a brown one so... I dyed it. Taking this one to WorldCon, too. Yes it needs a good iron (I'll do it in the hotel after I land), but it should be nice looking after that. Although, it's going to be hot, so I might not get a chance to wear it.

I got this $11 silver leather hair clip/pin because it was too lovely for words, I was druggy and not resistant to Amazon's wily ways.

See above on this $15 fascinator. Cute, I love the color, I needed a brown hat thing that wasn't so close to my hair color (it also comes in pink, lavender, and navy). This is coming with me to WorldCon too.

So these $7 100% silk scarves are a new thing for me but I am addicted. I needed them for the surgery (complicated explanation) but they also work for hair covering (when I am too lazy to do it proper) and for that quintessential stewardess meets sexy librarian neck scarf vintage look.

I got this $60 steampunk skirt because it was just too fab. I wanted it to go with my black and grey corset, but now that corset will need adjusting. I didn't have a long skirt to go with that corset and I was planning on making one, or I have been, for about 10 years now. I finally decided that was too long to wait and I should just buy something. I may add some trim and modify this one a bit but it works just as it is. Very sexy yet elegant and a single piece easily packed for conventions.

Hoping to see some of you at WorldCon. Fashion shots to come when I get back, or you can follow me on Instagram, and you will finally get to see the new Rack.

WorldCon Day One ~ Packing, Brown Gingham, Royal Blue, New Rack REVEALED

So, here we go, what you have all been waiting for, the great reveal...

The new figure!

I know I know, kinda anti-climactic. It doesn't look that different, but trust me, it is and it certainly feels different. All light and airy and stuff.

The last time I wore this was 2013 in Epinal, France so here's a bit of a comparison. Not the same pose but...

So... WorldCon, Spokane

Amazon has the Darice Protect and Store Organizer, 12inch square for $9

Discovered this great new way to pack hats. It's a craft box from Beverly's cost me $7 (JoAnns has it for $5). Worked great and is very light so adds next to nothing to the suitcase. Lid is wider than base to I'd pack it flipped. Of course, I bought it for the two big hats and then never ended up wearing them. I thought I'd be walking between hotels in the sun, but I ended up using the shuttle and there was no sun... smoke being the reason behind both. But I'm still pretty pleased with the notion and I'll be using it again when I next check luggage (which isn't often, frankly).

Here is another way to pack a bigger even more challenging hat from LifeHacker. The Best Way to Pack a Fancy Hat In a Suitcase So It Doesn't Get Crushed.

Thursday Daytime

Brown gingham pencil dress, vintage 1950s in a medium weight cotton.

As you can see, I subbed out the peeps for close-toed shoes. Turned out to be a not great decision as the inside leather on these brown pump double-strap MJs is disintegrating so they need liners. But I did get lots of compliments on them. Also I switched hats.

That hat is a tan buckram fascinator ($15 comes in three other colors) and the shoe clips are fluffy chiffon flowers ($13 comes in so man colors!). They can be clipped other places as well, like the neckline or whatever, but these just live on my pumps as the pumps were always a bit plane for my taste. I finished the look with my new bag(Charming Charlie Everyday Bag-in-bag $30), necklace watch (similar $6), steampunk earrings and brown leather gloves (both gifts).

Thursday Evening

Blue silk dress, stacked pearl necklace, pearl drop earrings, and gold accessories.

I adore this necklace, even though it laps the collar of the dress. That's not uncommon in similar vintage looks.
Queen Margherita of Italy via antique-royals

The flower is from Amazon ($8 and looks it), necklace I picked up at a vintage fair, gloves are modern (similar), as are the gold sandals (no longer available). Of course I am also wearing my obligatory pen necklace ($20).

Much more to come!

P.S. If you like my style and you are curvy like me, you have to follow Wendy of justjewels4u, it's my new favorite blog.

WorldCon Day Two ~ Navy Crinoline with Striped Top and a Marigold Cocktail Dress

$
0
0

So, Fashionable Reader...

On the second day of WorldCon, your Gail brings to you, one striped top, one navy skirt, and a marigold dress with leopard access-or-ies!

The top is a navy and white striped sailor top which I think is from the 1970s. I paid about $15 for it. I prefer my stripes vertical, if at all. The skirt is from eShakti (similar $11). I mostly use it as an underskirt and I don't love it. I wanted it in black, but it is the right length and look so it's working right now. It's no longer for sale. Again, I am carrying my new bag (Charming Charlie Everyday Bag-in-bag $30), and I paired it with vintage navy gloves (similar $14), steampunk earrings (similar $6, I bought at a convention a few years ago), a brown cardigan ($20 thrifted, although I do love this cute knitted shrug $14). My hair was misbehaving so I put it up in a scarf and did not wear either of the two straw hats that I had packed. I'm wearing my flats because my feet hurt.

Not sure I really dig this outfit, it didn't feel entirely me. Although I'm getting into Navy which I always have avoided.

That night I wore my marigold dress, which hasn't been out and about in years. It's my favorite cocktail dress but I must face the fact that it just doesn't fit 'em like it used to.

I paired it with my leopard accessories. Those are Calvin Klein wedge sandals from ages ago, I likely paid about $60 for them (these are the ones I would buy now to replace them, if they needed it). That's a studded knuckle clutch from TJ Maxx (similar on Amazon for $25) although what I am carrying is a leopard wine carrier $18. Don't flinch; it works great and it keeps stuff cold in transit. I use it for my lunches on the go, and I like how multipurpose it is, how light, how easy to pack, and the size so I might get another one), leopard gloves from Ross (similar $12), leopard hair clip (similar $10)  and a jet jewelry set from Dark Garden at the Dickens Fair (I love tassel necklaces, here's one like it for $18).

Sautoir  Van Cleef & Arpels, 1927  Sotheby’s

Now on to the dress.

Yes, I love this dress but it just isn't fitting right anymore. The shoulders keep falling off, even with keepers. It no longer looks quite right from the back. As I age I'm redistributing my fat, and yes, putting on a bit as well. I'm not begging for compliments or whatnot, I know what I look like and how much I weigh. I'm not upset with myself. I just want to dress what I got correctly, and show off what I should. I'm not sure this dress does that right anymore.

What it looked like about 5 years ago. From a professional photo shoot I did with Vanessa Applegate. Look how long my hair was. Crazy. I was practicing vintage poses.

Plus it wrinkles like a mofu if you sit in it for any length of time.

Anyway, I'm not sure I'm ready to entirely retire it, but I am giving it the jaundiced eye.

In other news, on the advise of a young lady at WorldCon, I'll be trying a new face powder for my next event. I'll let you know how it works & photographs.

It's Besame Cosmetics Brightening Violet Powder, and I had a gift card to Sephora from family, so I figured I'd give it a try. Right now I use MAC (Studio Fix Powder Plus Foundation - N3) over a smoothing serum (Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Serum). It gives good coverage, but my skin hates MAC. I'd love to switch to my preferred daily tinted SPF moisturizer (Aveda Inner Light Mineral Tinted Moisture Spf 15 02 Beechwood) with the new powder over if it works for a good vintage look.

More to come on that soon...

New Rack Vrs. Old Rack Bras & Calculations

$
0
0

Right, so. I'm over 2 months out from my reduction surgery and it is time to invest in a few new bras. I still can only wear ones that have no underwire but I can resume physical activity so what I need is something to exercise in and perhaps something vintage looking to make me happy.

Please note that bras in my size are made only by certain companies, and they tend to use UK sizing. Unless otherwise stated, all sizing is UK. If you recommend a bra because you think I've never heard of brand (Goddess, Elomi, Enell, any high street or walk in store like Vicky S) it's actually that they do not carry my band size, or cup size, or both. The perils of being an outlier. Ewa is a whole different conversation not to mention level of expense.

First things first, measurements.

Old measurements:
Ribs: 28"
Rack: 41"
What did I wear in bras? Panache 28J, Freya, Fantasie & Cleo 30H, Royce & Anita 32H

New measurements:
Ribs: 30" (that's what happens when I lie around eating)
Rack: 38"
I used tape measurements and this bra size calculator.
What did I order to try? Freya 30FF, Royce 30FF
What do I still want to try? Fantasie & Cleo 30FF, Anita 32F

DETAILS...

On order, I'll let you know how it goes.

1. Bra that Gives Good Vintage Shape

What I used to wear: Freya Dotty Nursing Bra 32H

 Freya Dotty Nursing Bra

I know, it's a nursing bra, it's OK. I just reassemble it a bit and the extra support is nice. Sometimes the straps creak slightly but I figure that adds to the vintage state of my underpinnings. I'll be ordering this one in a 30FF to try with my new figure.

 2. Sports Bra

What I used to wear: Anita Women's Extreme Control Sport Bra 32H

Anita Women's Extreme Control Sport Bra

I like this bra and it mostly still fits but it doesn't give the support it used to. Also it is starting to pill and scratch. Anita doesn't offer a 30FF and I wonder if they are listing US sizes, so I will likely try a 32F.

What I used to wear: Anita Women's Extreme Control Sport Bra 32H

Anita Women's Extreme Control Sport Bra

See above. One of the few wire free sports bras that comes in nude so it can be worn as a t-shirt bra also. I'll order one or the other of these Anitas in a size I think might work and then get the other one if it does.

What I used to wear: Royce Women's Impact Free Cotton Sports Bra 32H

Royce Women's Impact Free Cotton Sports Bra

This one offers free returns so I'll be trying it first. It's not my favorite sport bra, the neckline is very high making it useless as a regular bra (I prefer a sports bra for overnight flights) and the Velcro on the back is stupid and unnecessary but I want to give something a low risk try so 30FF here I come...

Underwire bras I'd like to replace, but have to wait for doctor's go ahead.

1. Vintage Look Underwire Full Support Bra

What I used to wear: Panache Women's Tango II Balconnet Bra in 28J
Panache Women's Tango II Balconnet Bra

The incorrectly named Tango Balconnet Bra is not a balconnet at all, it's full coverage. The lace is stiff and scratchy, so I likely won't buy this bra itself again. I owned it in both black and nude because it does give great lift and a very nice vintage look and was perfect for my old rack at 28J, not an easy size to find.

What I'll try instead: Fantasie Serene Full Cup Underwire Bra 30FF

Fantasie Serene Full Cup Underwire Bra

2. Low Cut, Wide Spaced Strap, Uplift Bra

What I used to own: Cleo Women's Juna Balconnet Bra 30H

Cleo Women's Juna Balconnet Bra

This bra's was the only one I could find that gave good support and a low neckline. I will likely buy it again in a 30FF if it is still available when I can start wearing under-wire.

3. T-Shirt Bra

What I used to own: Fantasie Women's Smoothing Moulded T-Shirt Bra 30H

I'll likely try this one again too, in a 30FF.

So there you have it. I'll report in on the wire-free ones first. Then in a few months let you know how the underwire ones go. Of course I may have to get all new bras, if my shape has shifted too much.

WorldCon Day Three ~ Flowered 1940s Day Dress & Pink 1930s Evening Gown

$

So, Fashionable Reader, I wore a burnt sienna colored lipstick for these outfits. Something about Spokane made my regular red lipstick fail. (In fact, I ordered a new long last product as a result, just to try Smashbox.) Yes, I am aware it harkens more to the 1990s than any later period, but sometimes the lips must smack to another color.

For Saturday daytime I wore an old favorite: my flowered day dress.

This is a great dress. Unfortunately, I split the sleeve at the seam, a la Hulk, halfway through the day before I ran into any friends and remembered to press them into taking a photo. Sigh. So this picture from my kaffeeklatch will have to do.

Kaffeeklatsch by Kelly Horn via FB

As you can see, I paired it with the pale blue-grey fascinator ($15), (I like this so much I'm thinking of investing in the red one as well), some filigree steampunk earrings (gift from a reader), vintage cream gloves (similar $11), and the obligatory pen necklace ($19). I wore little gold flats (similar) because I kept having to go up 9 flights of stairs to my room. Good thing too, for that split sleeve happened when I had only 10 minutes between panels. I was still late to the panel, but not for lack of speed. I was on time, just couldn't find the darn thing. I ended up wearing the outfit I had planned for Sunday (sorry, moving so fast for the rest of that day that no one got a photo).

Saturday night, in honor of the Hugos (although I didn't attend) I wore a long bright pink diaphanous gown. It's modern, but kinda crazy 1930s cool.

I paired it with a head scarf ($7) and a gold flower clip ($8), gold gloves, gold clip earrings (vintage) and the same gold flats as earlier. I was feeling rather outrageous.

A word on the headscarf: I purchased a number of these (blogged about theme here) to use during recovery from surgery and then as head/neck scarves. Turns out that 20x20 inches is NOT big enough for the head, I need at least 30x30 or 40x40. So I've ordered a few others. I'll let you know what I think.

Since I have so few images of the outfits, here's a glimpse at the packing:

And here are some of the cool things I spotted in the dealer's room at a booth called Crystal's Joyll. Or something equally challenging to read and comprehend. If I gave convention dealers/Etsy shops any one piece of advice it would be: "Pursue Memorable Branding." Don't be cute. Don't be clever. Don't be fancy. Be easy to remember. Sigh.

Bra Shopping ~ Reducing the Rack & Fudging the Results

$
0
0

So, Fashionable Reader, recently I did a blog post about ordering for the new Rack. Sadly, it's the usual rigmarole of nothing fits and trying to find what does.

A reminder, measurements.

Old measurements:
Ribs: 28"
Rack: 41"
What did I wear in bras? Panache 28J, Freya, Fantasie & Cleo 30H, Royce & Anita 32H

New measurements:
Ribs: 30
Rack: 38"
I used tape measurements and this bra size calculator.

What did I order to try? Freya 30FF, Royce 30FF (then 32F)

What do I still want to try? Fantasie & Cleo 30FF, Anita 30H

DETAILS...

1. Bra that Gives Good Vintage Shape

What I used to wear: Freya Dotty Nursing Bra 32H

 Freya Dotty Nursing Bra

What I ordered: Freya Dotty Nursing Bra 30FF

Results: Band was exactly right, but cup was about a size too big. Returned and reordered in 30F.

Cost of having a Rack: $11 return shipping/hassle because larger bra sizes rarely offer free returns (and counting), $46 for the bra

 2. Sports Bra

What I used to wear: Royce Women's Impact Free Cotton Sports Bra 32H

Royce Women's Impact Free Cotton Sports Bra

What I ordered:  Royce Women's Impact Free Cotton Sports Bra 30FF

Results: Band was far too tight, and cup was about right. Returned and reordered in 32F (up a band = down at least one cup). I'm thinking Royce runs on the old style of band measurement = add 2 inches to the actual measurement.

Cost of having a Rack: $52.54 (this one has free returns) but I'll still need at least two other sports bras.

Results: Band fit perfectly on the 32F, cup also fit perfectly but if I order a second one, I might go down to 32E for more support of higher impact exercise. This one will do for hiking and biking, not running.

If you have a really small rib cage this is the sports bra for you!

New Acquisitions ~ Bits and Bobs, Top and Shoes

Haven't done much shopping recently except out of necessity, Fashionable Reader. But I am using you ruthlessly to keep me honest about my spending habits, so here's what I have gotten:

Two pairs of Mia's Nomad flats. I already owned a pair in pale pink which finally died on me and then seized with panic, because these are discontinued, I combed the internet for replacements in 7.5. Found them in black and white. Rather chuffed with myself because I then chucked a pair of black flats, white flats, and the dead pink ones. So in the end I got rid of three pairs and replaced with two.
Amazon $20

Etsy $15

Had to buy a bunch of button front tops for post surgery. This was my favorite and the only one likely to stick around long term, provided as the New Rack settled the dreaded 'button gap" doesn't return. I just love the color. I think emerald is my favorite color to wear.

Ross $12

Thrifted $20

I got this thinking of steampunk outfits. But I may wear it to an evening event as well. I do have a cropped jacket from H&M that I usually use, or a beaded cardy, but the jacket is on it's last legs and both were too 1950s for steampunk. I don' know why I'm hunting for excuses, really I just thought this was so cute.

Target $12 sale

Been doing a lot of Target shopping recently for sleep bras. Knowing I have to replace my black tankini top, I delved into the swimsuit sale recently. Didn't find the black but did find this lovely leopard puppy. So cute and I may even wear it as a top on a hot day at a convention. Perhaps with my red capris.

Vintage Store $30

Vintage white cardy, acrylic. I have a cashmere cream colored one I love, but I needed a pure white and stumbled upon this puppy, joy of joys, not wool! Snapped it up.

The 1850s were not particularly pretty, Fashionable Reader. Let's be honest, that's part of the reason I chose it. The interesting thing about the time period is that the satirists of the day knew this, and mocked their own fashions.

Fashion Commentary from Punch Aug 1853...

OUR BEAUTIFUL FASHIONS OF THE PRESENT DAY.

Our beautiful fashions go on improving! Like Buckingham Palace, they are constantly being altered, and never altered for the better. What the human façade will be ultimately, there's no knowing. Everything has been tried in the shape of flowers, feathers, ornaments on the top, and, in some instances, paint, that could possibly disfigure it. Let these disfigurements only continue, and they may have the effect of converting the human head into a kind of MEDUSA'S, that will turn into stone all who look at it. One of the latest absurdities is the way in which ladies wear their bonnets—if it can be called wearing at all, when it is falling, like a Capuchin's hood, right down their backs. It thus forms a capital receptacle for collecting any refuse or rubbish that may be dropt, or thrown, into it. We know one lady who found her bonnet, when she got home, perfectly filled with dust. It was quite a dust-bin in a small way—and the luncheon, which was on the table at the time, had to be sent away, as everything was spoilt by the dusty shower that the lady had unconsciously shaken down upon it.
There was another lady—whose husband is not so rich as he should be, and who grumbles fearfully, poor fellow, at every new bonnet he has to pay for—who discovered her chapeau to be as full as it could hold of orange-peel. Some malicious little boys must have amused themselves in walking behind her and pitching into it every piece of orange-peel they found lying about. It was an amusing game of pitch- in-the-hole to them. The consequence has been that the lady, who is extremely particular, especially when she takes a new fancy like a new bonnet into her head, has been compelled to throw away her old bonnet, and to have a new one. The poor husband, who is really to be pitied (husbands generally are), has been obliged, in order to pay for the additional expense, to walk instead of riding, to give up smoking, and to cut off his luncheons—all of which expenses came out of his own pocket and not out of the housekeeping. The last time he was seen he was so thin that it was almost a microscopical effort to see him. But this absurd fashion, coupled with the other absurdity of long dresses, has the one good effect in keeping our streets clean, for the low bonnets carry off all the superfluous dust, and the long dresses carry away all the superfluous mud.

It would be difficult to say which fashion, in point of cleanliness, ranks the lowest. A classical friend of ours humorously declares that he thinks the bonnets will soon be the lower of the two, and that the ladies, for convenience' sake, will shortly be wearing them, tied on to the end of their dresses. It will be relieving them, he funnily says, of a great draw-back, and will have the further advantage of keeping their dear heads cool. This classical friend also says that the ladies, as viewed at present with their bonnets hanging behind them, look like female anthropophagi, or "monsters whose heads do grow beneath their shoulders." However, we have only one hope that the fashion, which seems to be dropping lower and lower every day, will gradually drop off altogether, and then the marital cry will be "Il n'y a plus de Bonnets!" and Cranbourne Street will be ruined. But after all, the eccentricities in the way of dress do not lie exclusively on the side of the ladies.

We must not throw every absurdity on their backs. The gentlemen come in, also, for a large share of the ridiculous. Look at an elegant young gent of the present day! His hat you must confess is faultless. It combines every quality within its lovely chimney-pot form. It has not only beauty of shape, but utility of purpose. The brim is admirable. A lady-bird can about settle on it, and that is all. There is just sufficient width to enable you to lift the hat with, and what more do you want? As for keeping the sun off, it is not needed for that purpose, for when is the sun ever seen in England? and as for keeping the rain off, as it is a well-known fact that no Englishman ever ventures out of doors without his umbrella, it cannot be needed for that purpose any more than for the sun. Then look at the shirt-collar! It is a high linen wall, behind which the face is securely protected from the sharp, cutting winds that are continually flying about our climate, like so many aërial guillotines. One's head would infallibly be chopped off, cleaner than any head of asparagus, if it were not for some such protection; and besides, we should not find fault with our young men if they do try to hide as much as they can of their beautiful features. You may be sure they only do it out of charity to the ladies! The small ribbon that fences in this high wall of collar is, likewise, most beautiful. It is almost an invisible fence that is planted evidently more for ornament than use. The wall would look cold and naked—a kind of workhouse wall—without it. We may say that every part of the dress bespeaks a degree of taste that would win the admiration even of a savage. In fact, get a savage—a greater savage, if you can, than one who beats his wife; then select a Young Lady and a Young Gent in the present year's costumes; let the former be as fashionable as you like—let the latter be as green as you can find him: then put them before your savage—turn them gently round for five minutes, and then ask him his candid opinion. We will wager our next week's receipts—no small wager, by the way—that he will be puzzled to say—
